What is surrogacy?

Surrogacy is a method to overcome infertility in which a woman (the surrogate mother) takes on the responsibility of carrying and giving birth to a child with whom she has no genetic connection, for a couple or individual who will become the legal parents of the child after birth.

The creation of an embryo for transfer to the surrogate mother is carried out through in vitro fertilization (IVF) using the biological parents' reproductive cells.

According to legal regulations, a surrogate mother cannot have a genetic relationship with the child. Therefore, the surrogate mother is not permitted to also serve as an egg donor within the program.

2

Contract Signing

After selecting the appropriate program, the genetic parents sign a contract with the Center, which then begins searching for a candidate to serve as the surrogate mother and prepares her for embryo transfer according to the schedule specified in the contract.

3

Medical Screening

Before joining the program, the surrogate candidate must undergo a medical examination. The Center organizes this screening at medical facilities. If the tests and examination results are favorable, which will be communicated to the genetic parents, the candidate receives final approval.

4

Contract with the Surrogate Mother

The Center prepares a personalized surrogacy agreement with the surrogate mother, acting on behalf of either the Center or the genetic parents.

5

Preparation of the Surrogate Mother for Embryo Transfer

Based on the screening results, the reproductive specialist prescribes medications for the surrogate candidate to prepare her endometrium for embryo transfer (hormonal therapy).

6

Embryo Transfer

On the appointed day, the embryo is transferred to the surrogate mother’s uterus. At 6-8 weeks of pregnancy, an ultrasound is performed to confirm successful implantation and detect the fetal heartbeat, marking the onset of pregnancy.

7

Pregnancy Care for the Surrogate Mother

During the entire pregnancy, the surrogate mother lives in a specialized apartment. A coordinator from the Center is assigned to ensure compliance with doctor’s instructions, a proper regimen, nutrition, and to assist with daily needs and leisure activities. The surrogate mother undergoes regular medical check-ups and is provided with necessary medications if needed.

Documentation for the Newborn

After the baby’s birth, the Center arranges for the notarized consent of the surrogate mother to list the genetic parents as the legal parents on the birth certificate and confirms the surrogate’s absence of any claims.

How is a Typical Pregnancy Different from Surrogacy?

Arrow Down
Typical Pregnancy
Surrogate Pregnancy

Origin of the Embryo

In a typical pregnancy, a woman carries a child who is genetically related to her and usually the father.

In surrogacy, the woman (surrogate mother) carries a child who is genetically related to the genetic parents (usually the mother’s egg and the father’s sperm) or to donors, but not to herself.

Reproductive Technology

Typical pregnancy occurs naturally through fertilization of an egg by sperm within a woman’s body.

Surrogacy involves assisted reproductive technology (IVF, or in vitro fertilization). An embryo created in the laboratory is transferred to the surrogate mother’s uterus.

Role of the Woman

In a typical pregnancy, the woman is both the genetic mother (if using her own egg) and the carrying mother.

In surrogacy, assisted reproductive technology (IVF, or in vitro fertilization) is used. An embryo created in the laboratory is transferred to the surrogate mother’s uterus.
